What Aid & Attendance Pays in 2026

Central Texas is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the country — yet the VA benefit most useful for aging at home is one most veteran families have never heard of. Aid & Attendance pays a monthly, tax-free pension to wartime veterans (and their surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or meal preparation.

WhoMax monthly benefit (2026)
Single veteran$2,424 / month
Married veteran$2,874 / month
Surviving spouse$1,558 / month
Two married veterans$3,845 / month

At Austin-area home care rates, the married-veteran benefit covers roughly 20 hours of professional care per week — enough for daily morning visits or several long shifts. For many families, it's the difference between "we can't afford help" and a sustainable care plan. (See our Austin cost guide for what care costs by schedule.)

Who Qualifies

Four tests, all of which must be met:

How Austin Families Typically Use It

The benefit is paid to the family, not to an agency, so you choose how to spend it on care. A common pattern: the family starts a modest care schedule privately, applies for Aid & Attendance, and expands the schedule once approved — because benefits are paid retroactively to the application date, the lump-sum back payment often funds the expansion.

Applying: What to Expect

Applications go through the VA (form 21-2680 with a physician's evaluation, plus financial documentation). Decisions commonly take several months. Three practical tips:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aid & Attendance the same as VA home health care?

No. The VA also runs separate programs (like Homemaker/Home Health Aide services through VA medical centers) for veterans enrolled in VA healthcare. Aid & Attendance is a cash pension paid to the family. Some veterans can use both.

Can a surviving spouse who remarried qualify?

Generally no — remarriage usually ends eligibility, with narrow exceptions. A Veterans Service Officer can review the specifics.

Does the benefit count as taxable income?

No. Aid & Attendance is tax-free.

What wars count as wartime service?

WWII, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Era, and the Persian Gulf War (which for VA pension purposes runs from 1990 to a date not yet set by law). Peacetime-only service does not qualify for this pension.
